Simply Love My Weekends

Had a great weekend :) Nothing too eventful...it was the food, the relaxed pace in which we went about our activities, and a great companion (Pete), as we talked about everything under the sun amidst the activities, that make me look forward to the weekends.

21 Sept, Friday:

Pete and I saved our appetites to have a good dinner after work. As we were still hungering for the desserts which looked so tempting on the Azabu Sabo menu, we decided to head for it at Marina Square:

Pete's order of Japanese Beef Curry with Omelette & Rice. Looks good, tasted good, just a little on the salty side in my opinion.

My order of Pork Cutlet Rice. Pork was not tender enough that Pete broke the spoon while trying to cut it.

Broken spoon vs the metal spoon that the waitress gave Pete after the little accident. Wahahaha!

What we came for: Dessert! Strawberry ice-cream, with fresh strawberries, dumplings (like mochi), red bean paste, topped with strawberry syrup. Sluuuurrp! (But I had a stomachache a while later, but again...what's new?)

Saw a pair of shoes at Charles & Keith, and figured they will make a nice pair of dinner shoes. We decided I will only get them if I still thought about them after dinner, which I did, so here they are! Ha ha!

We strolled around the Esplanade area after our dinner and my new purchase. There are some changes to the area, and we were enjoying the breeze by the waters when....stomachache striked! We had to head home...

22 Sept, Saturday:

Woke up bright and early on Saturday morning (actually later than I would wake up on weekdays :P) for our supposedly weekly jog at West Coast Park. It has been a long time since I went running, whereas Pete has been getting regular workouts during his RT thrice a week. Not surprisingly, I could not run much, but it was a good effort la.....I did sweat it out...ma...

Headed to West Coast market for a breakfast of soya bean milk, you tiao, and jwee kuey after the run. So much for the run...

We went back to my place and plonked ourselves on the couch to watch the Korean tearjerker A Moment to Remember.

About a love story between a carpenter-turned-architect, and a girl who was doomed with alzheimer's at the ripe-old age of 27. If you do watch it, get your kleenex ready at the parts where the girl writes him a letter at the brief moment when she could remember everything. Like Pete said, sometimes this can be a fate that is more painful than the loss of a loved one through death. Starring Jung Woo-sung and pretty Korean actress Son Ye Jin (April Snow, The Art of Seduction, Summer Scent (drama) ), this movie is worth the watch.

Meal-time again, and we decided to have the famous duck rice near my place for dinner. Coincidentally, Cindy called up just as we were about to leave the house to ask for directions to the duck rice stall! We met up over dinner, and I saw Jasper for the 3rd time since he arrived into this world ha ha. Big boy now (and hyperactive), with huge eyes. Good genes from the mother ;)

Pete and I headed to Vivo City after dinner to catch the comedy I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry. Despite it being a comedy starring Adam Sandler, I found myself nodding off during some parts of the movie, and wishing it would end soon. I think it was because we caught the 9.45pm movie. But, that's not a good reason ya, I think I just have this "Lao Lang" (old people) disease or something, where I have to go to bed early, as it has been proven that it is not just action movies that put me to sleep anymore. I'm a laaaaoooo laaaannnng......

23 Sept, Sunday:

The 1-for-1 high-tea voucher at Hotel Intercontinental expires next week, and we decided to utilise it this afternoon! The English high-tea items came in 3 tiers, made up of sandwiches, muffins, quiche, small pieces of cakes, and some pudding made with mango and soursop. Despite being bite-sized, the food was rather filling.

English High-Tea Tier

After a satisfying meal.......

We walked around Bugis Junction, and were surprised by some of the changes and new shops. It has been quite some time since we were there. We proceeded with more walking around at Marina Square, before settling down for dinner at Sakae Sushi (our unanimous choice of relatively safe food (least "stomachachy"). Had our usual sushi and chawamushi, and tried the Chicken Sukiyaki as well.

Chicken Sukiyaki - Very, very sweet soup with chinese long cabbage, beancurd, mushrooms, and chicken added, with a bowl of egg for dipping.....

...but we decided to beat it and mix it into the soup

That was basically our weekend...
What else, am counting down again... ;)

Introducing the word - Biak

The word, BIAK. Originated from the sound made when you drop something soft and gooey (possibly slimy) on the floor.

However, in our dictionary, this word has different meanings for different context.
  • Definition: Feeling down
  • Usage: Wah lao, this week so sian loh. I'm feeling so biakked. (Normal grammer applies)

  • Definition: Collapse
Usage: Work load is damn heavy loh. Go home liao confirm immediately biak one.

  • Definition: Something soft and gooey dropped on the floor
Usage: What is the difference between a man jumping from the 2nd storey and the 20th storey?
The man on the 20th storey will go "AAaaaaaaaaaaaaaah!!" *biak*
The man on the 2nd storey will go *biak* "Aaaaaaahhhh........" (get it? -_-;)
Just came back from RT, so I'm going to biak liao. Maybe I can take UL tomorrow? ;)

Pete out.

*Update on 24th Sept 1030am*
Apparently, the word, biak, in malay has a rather interesting meaning. According to my friend, it means to reproduce. So let me add this on:
  • Definition: To reproduce.
  • Usage: (In a pub) Hey girl *crooked smile and winks*, wana come to my place and biak tonight ?

Hahaha, now we have a new pick up line liao!

Department of Urgent Leave

An entry for the 2nd consecutive day, and doing so in the comfort of my own room :) Thanks to Pete who put in some late nights to do his little magic on my archaic lappie, making it possible for me to have my own wireless internet connection. Being archaic, I do not see the sentence that I am typing till 3 seconds after I have typed it. Yes, it is soooooo lagging. Not to mention, it is operating on...ta da! WINDOWS 98 :O

On the bus on my way to work this morning, a lady passenger boarded the bus with her son, who looked to me about 4-5 years of age. The lady thought she could go by without paying the fare for him. However, the bus driver called her back to pay the fare. Instead of being embarrassed by it (which I'm sure I will turn beet red), the lady picked a fight with the driver for all on the bus to see and hear. The driver, although not really in the wrong, was not exactly polite as well. He too made his comments loud and clear. In my opinion, he was definitely not wrong to say he was just doing his job, and going by the height of the boy, he should have his due fare paid. However, the lady kept telling him to shut his gap, that he watch out, and kept emphasising that he "cannot see open" (看不开). Huh? I think it's more like she was the one right? If you want to avoid paying the few cents, you are the one who is 看不开-ing, lady... Anyway, I was hoping the driver would not do anything rash, like stop the bus mid-way to further confront the cheapo lady, as I was more concerned about not being able to get my teh-si in time. And if I can't get teh-si in time to start the day..... I may want to take urgent leave...

Arhhh....Urgent Leave. "...take urgent leave.." is a phrase that has been widely used within my department at work. Started off as something my colleague and I would just mutter to each other when sian-ness hits us. Then it became a louder proclamation, with our Subject Head joining us. This "trend" has spread to one of our colleagues from another department. In fact, I think my boss may jump on the Urgent Leave bandwagon too. There are many reasons why we will need to take urgent leave. Here are just 10 of them:

1. When there are many good movies being screened around the same time, sometimes we can consider taking UL to "kua hee" (watch movie). How else would we be able to watch every movie on our list without burning a hole in our pockets during the weekends, eh?

2. When the server at work is down, and you can't access your email, intranet and internet, time to shut everything down, apply for UL, pack bag and go home.

3. When the new intake of students coming in is huge, and there is a need to open extra classes. You find yourself with insufficient teachers and classrooms, and your time-tables look like a massive teacher juggling act, time to take UL.

4. When your fellow colleague repeatedly insults you and the rest in your office for being short. Grrrr.... please take UL.

5. When you are feeling stressed because your stomach decides to act up for no rhyme or reason, or when you are traumatised from the dream the night before of your wisdom tooth, and you start googling "Wisdom Teeth", UL may do you good.

6. When you have no inspiration whatsoever on what to consume for lunch, and lunch becomes more of a chore, UL may be the solution for the inspiration needed. And since lunchtime is a daily affair, what say UL is too?

7. When your jaw has dropped so much that it has touched the ground, cos students attempt to bribe you in order to improve their otherwise pathetic attendance, and asking if they can 商量 with you about it. Flabbergasted? Take UL lor.

8. When you are a travel enthusiast, and the plane ticket to Poland/Spain/Korea (and the list goes on) has dropped (but not to the ground like your jaw), take UL to get that ticket, and start packing for the trip.

9. When you cannot get into the Training Management System (TMS) despite your nimble fingers logging in first thing in the morning, you should follow #2 (when the server is down), and apply for UL, pack bag and just go home la.

10. So maybe you got into TMS alright in the morning, but it hung on you by lunchtime, and you find yourself denied entry into it for the rest of the day, well..........you can still consider half-day UL.

10 good reasons to be on UL everyday, but alas, despite the loud proclamations, no one has applied for it as yet. It shall, however, be our daily chant to get us through the day.

Maybe the driver could have considered taking UL after being accused of being 看不开-ing. Or maybe he did...

A Fruitful Weekend

Here is a true blue bimbo blog. Just bear with me for a paragraph or two , but I just feel sooo good about my recent purchases ;) Had a fruitful start to my weekend. For starters, managed to step into Tangs on Friday evening before catching Ratatouille. In less than 30 minutes, I managed to purchase 2 bags at a jolly good price of $19.90 each. In fact, the bags are 2 of the 5 under-$20 purchases I have made recently. Yeah, check them out!

Oh, and Pete, are you regretting now that you invited me to be your co-blogger? Cos I think I have just begun to turn the blog that you started into a true, blue bimbo blog (well, at least for this entry, k?). If your friends are still reading your blog these days, sorry guys! *Chuckle*

Ok, ok, bimboism aside, I attended my ex-colleague, Josephine's wedding lunch reception on Sunday. It was held at the Holiday Inn Park View. The food was rather good, loved the mango pudding at the end. Met up with 2 of my ex-colleagues from ASME. It was good to catch up after some time :)

Me with the bride & groom

Lady in Red
Met up with Pete after the reception, and we headed to Suntec City later in the evening. Got deceived into a Bridal Fair, which comprised of 1 and only 1 bridal studio exhibitor. *Disclaimer: We are not getting married. (....yet...as emphasised by Pete :P)* After sitting through the sales talk, we decided we were not that impressed, and headed off for dinner at this Korean food eatery at the basement.

Korean dinner. Verdict: Fair

All in all, it was quite a fruitful weekend, with 2 bag purchases, 2 movies (Ratatouille & No Reservations), lotsa food (nice Japanese ramen, wedding lunch reception, Korean food). Looking forward to the weekend again.

Monday....and counting down....out!

My attempt at bimbo blogging

Hello all! Ah mi and I have discussed a lot on not letting this blog become a bimbo blog and so, rather than we unintentionally let this blog evolve "bimbotically", I decided to try to bimbo blog for once. So here it goes:

================================================
Disclaimer: No bimbos was harmed in the writing of this blog. Reader should expect sudden onset of nausea when reading. Authors take no responsibility if reader were to suffer from massive case of goose pimples or pukes all over the keyboard.

Weekend was more than 两菜一汤

Howdy! It's been some time since I contributed. Well, my co-blogger has been updating quite regularly, giving me the chance to slack a little :) This weekend was more than just Princess Lu Lu and the home-cooked dinner, let me fill in the gaps.

We started our weekend by stuffing ourselves with a "half-chicken" of breast meat chicken rice on Friday night. It's still the best chicken rice I have ever eaten since young. For those who are interested, Sin Kee chicken rice stall is located on the 2nd storey of the food centre at Margaret Drive, within walking distance from Queenstown MRT station. Oily, but fragrant rice....with nice, tender meat... *drools once again*

On Saturday, we tried the newly-opened "Central" (Hong Kong Cafe) at Vivocity for lunch. I was disappointed that they did not have the fried "gong zai mian" (fried maggi mee). I ordered pork chop noodles, and Pete had dry beef hor fun. We tried pork floss pancake, which was not fantastic, but the Hong Kong milk tea was quite enjoyable. Later that evening, we tried to whip up a home-cooked dinner. I have to say that the dinner was not that delicious...edible if one is not a fussy eater (a.k.a Pete, *phew*). Just simple dishes that sure took some time before they arrived on the dinner table. Pete, my sous chef, should have given himself a little more credit than he did in the previous entry. Aside from the opening of cans, Pete did all of the chopping and cutting, washed up after the meal, and even watered the plants, and mopped the floor while the head chef tried to serve up a decent meal. (Reminder: To watch "No Reservations") And oh yeah, once we settled down to eat about 1.5 hours later, I sure did not have much of an appetite. I wonder if this is how most moms feel after they have busied themselves cooking up a storm for the family every night. Oh ya, just in case you are wondering why we are playing domestic god and goddess this weekend, it's cos my parents are away on an Alaskan cruise, enjoying the glaciers up, close and personal as best possible. My brother is training away in Taiwan, and thus, the dutiful daughter is left to babysit the house.

On Sunday, we managed to dragged ourselves down to Takashimaya for the Mid-Autumn Festival Fair. Mooncakes galore!!! Boy, it sure was packed like sardines. Did not manage to follow Sally's advice of scanning the fair from B1, zero in on location of preferred vendors, and then going down, shout "BOMB", and proceed to grab desired quantity of mooncakes and pay for them. It was a good idea, though. After some squeezing through, we settled on two boxes from Raffles The Plaza (dressed prettily in a cheongsam-like box) for our families, and a box of mini-mooncakes from Ritz-Carlton for my grandma.

Mooncakes from Raffles The Plaza

So much for making use of credit card discounts, we could not make use of them at the Fair at Taka. We really should have bought them at Vivocity, where the discounts are applicable. This has taught us to purchase what we have set our sights on in the first place, cos in the end, after all the squeezing and endless choices (not necessarily a good thing), we ended up with what we wanted to get in the first place, sans the discount!

We proceeded to Pete's place after the mooncake acquisition. Managed to look through some of Pete's old photos. Sooooo cute, although I must say I'm quite amazed that Pete can't tell from his younger photos, if they were of him or his brother. We had dinner at Pete's place. His mom prepared ginseng chicken soup, and delicious, sweet pork ribs. Had an enjoyable (and stressful) time competing with Pete on the Nintendo DS after dinner. Turned out Pete may not be the fastest in mental sums around here, huh? Muahahahaahaha!

We ended the day by paying a short visit to my grandma, and presenting her with the mooncakes. I hope she will enjoy them :)

That's about it for our weekend. Not bad for a pair of nua-ers. Signing off, time to get back to work :P

两菜一汤

The last weekend was a peaceful one, plenty of lazing, eating and VCD watching. One highlight of this weekend was that we managed to finish the Korean drama "Princess Lulu" at last. Some highlight that is, huh? :P

For the real highlight, I finally tasted ah mi's cooking long at last!! I have heard so much about it, but never ever got to taste it. So without further delays, here's the picture of the wonderful dinner I had~

Verdict: Delicious!

The 2 dishes were stirred fried vegetables, and baked beans plus luncheon meat. Rounded off with a nice clear vegetable soup. The food tasted great, but I think we had too much food already. It is really difficult to estimate the portions and cook for 2 people. So I guess most likely we will eat out in the future bah. FYI, in the top right corner is the hand of our hardworking chef, who had no appetite after slogging for the meal.

Oh and in case you are wondering, I helped out too! But it's just cutting and opening cans nia lah.. hahahaha.. better than nothing right? :P

Anyway, its over and out for me. Ciao~

Really scary movie

Hi all, ah mi and I just went to catch the movie documentary, Jesus Camp, over the weekend, and I must say that it's quite disturbing to see things like that happening. I must admire their faith in their religion, but it appears that they are putting it above everything else. Even their lives.

Throughout the movie, I can see them asking their children, "Are you willing to lay down your lives for God?". Isn't it abit too extreme to ask your children that? So are they willing to sacrifice their children's lives for God too? It's scary to see parents indoctrinating their children in this manner, drilling into their young minds that there is nothing more important than God. The children in this film are also home schooled, and are taught that creationism is the truth, while evolution is crap. This is another scary thing about the families depicted in this movie. Their strong passion in their faith makes them over reliant on it. Hence, for them, everything will be "God will help me". For me, I was brought up with the notion that "God helps those who help themselves" lah, so I still need to help myself.

Another thing that I noticed in the film was this little girl, Rachael, was going around trying to spread the word of God, meaning converting people lah. One phrase that she used was "Sir, if you were to die today, where do you think you will go?" I must say, I have heard this phrase a couple of times myself, when local Christians come knocking on my door and trying to convert me, even when I tell them that I'm a Roman Catholic. Apparently, to them (people trying to convert me), Roman Catholics will still go to hell after death.

On the afterlife issue, I decided to post a question to this blog that the families in the film was maintaining to dispel the misunderstanding of people who watched the film. And here is the brief exchange:

Peter

Hi, I've got a simple question. If I do good all my life, but I'm not a Christian and had never been "born again", will where would I go after I die? Thanks.

Monday, September 3, 2007 - 03:07 AM

Tim

Peter,

Thanks for the question.

We answer this question several times on this site, but the site has become almost too large to look for specific stuff. If we want to get in a conversation on this one, it might be better on the God thread, but I will give our simple answer here.

First, we are not assigning anyone to hell. That is not our job and hell is not a focus with us at all. I don't think hell is ever even mentioned in the movie.

Secondly, I do not believe that those who have never heard the name of Jesus or had an opportunity to understand His claims will automatically be assigned to hell. Billy Graham agrees with me as do many other ministers and Bible teachers and Christians.

Romans says the Gentiles "who do not have the law, [but] do by nature things required by the law, they are a law for themselves, even though they do not have the law." (Rom 2:14 NIV) This is an indication that God is just and will judge everyone according to their situation. God is not trying to get people into hell. He is on the side of people. He is on your side. Jesus said, "The Son of Man did not come into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world." (Jn 3:17)

Now, if you have had the opportunity to understand the claims of Jesus as the Son of God, then I think it would be dangerous to reject Him. You would be rejecting God's love for you. Keep an open heart so that God can reveal Himself to you and keep being a seeker of truth. If you do that with a clear conscience, then I believe God will show Himself to you in this lifetime.

Monday, September 3, 2007 - 10:31 AM

Personally, I think my question is not really answered, maybe let me try asking another question, and see how is the response like. Will post it here, just in case you are interested in this boring theological argument thingy.

Pete out.
